The Emmental
The Emmental is in the northeast of the Canton of Bern. This mountain landscape, which is criss-crossed by numerous rivers, includes first and foremost the watershed of the Emme River northeast of the city of Bern up to the 1408 meter high Napf in the east. The landscape of the valleys is characterized by meadows and pastures where the dairy cattle that support the region's significant cheese production graze. Especially the steeper mountainsides are still covered with pine forest, while mountain pastures extend above 800 meters.
